@vintagetyler, what a tricky question. Perhaps I can turn it on it’s head to answer you. I can’t think of many book or film tech that don’t have some basis in a scientific idea. Can you think of any?

In that way, they are already true! I know that I’m sounding a bit evasive here, but I’m not. I think that anything that we can imagine we can (eventually) do. This may not be all to the good, however.

      Cheers,
      Anita.

      Hey Vintatgetyler

This is a really cool question! We’ve already seen this happen in the past – mobile phones and 3D printers were thought of as “super technology” in the original Star Trek series and now they’re mass produced commodities. Films like 2001: A Space Odyssey also predicted space tourism – something Virgin Galactic are heavily involved in financing. A very similar product to the I-Pad was also described in the book by Arthur C Clarke.

Bionic limbs that can be controlled by your mind, such as those seen in Star Trek, are now actually becoming a reality. These will be one of the best advances for people that have suffered amputations due to disease or trauma, allowing unconscious control of new limbs.

Another technology that is making its way towards the clinic is the cloning and growing of human organs and blood for transplants. This has often been seen in far less ethical forms in films such as “The Island”, which means that strict regulations are going to have to be made if synthetic organs are to be used in the future.

I think movies with super machines that can operate and heal humans (like in Elysium) will be a part of the future! We already have very cool machines that help us to operate on humans, it’s only time before they are even more super advanced and doing the healing for us!
