At the time I was working for GlaxoSmithKline who are a pharmaceutical company. Because it costs hundreds of millions of pounds to make a new drug, they pick areas of diseases to treat that will make money.

They have teams of scientist working on all sorts of diseases so they placed me in a team that was working on a heart disease project. I enjoyed it, as it treating heart disease by making a medicine that lowered cholesterol levels, and high cholesterol affects a lot of people (up to 3 billion I think)

I’ve had more choice with the disease areas I’ve worked on at University. When doing a PhD you work with a lecturer. They usually have certain diseases they’re interested in but you can also come up with new project ideas as well.
