      To win! 🙂
Doping usually increases the amount of oxygen that an athlete can carry in their body, and more oxygen means a faster, more powerful athlete 🙂

      Hi Charlieeepalmer,

There are two reasons for sports doping, I think.

      1. To (try to) be the best. Mind you, it may not work!

      2. Because somebody (eg the team Doctors) told you that you had to, and you were so keen to do the sport that you would do anything to stay in it.
      Cheers,
      Anita.

The main reason for doping in sport is pretty simple – to win. Sadly a lot of athletes that have been the best for a long time often turn to doping when they begin to be beaten by other new athletes.

Doping usually comes in the form of steroids to increase muscle mass and power, or blood doping to increase the amount of oxygen an athlete can use making them faster.

One type of doping which is really starting to worry the authorities is gene doping. This is where the athlete is injects genetic material to change their gene expression to again increase oxygen capacity. What’s concerning about this is there currently is no test to detect this kind of cheating.
