      Hi Hannahgrimes

You are clearly the question master. I became interested at drug discovery when I was at university – largely because learning how drugs work in the body was the most interesting part of my course for me. I always wanted to research illness and find out how we could make people better, but in my final year my little brother was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. This is an incurable condition and it has really driven me to start a career where one day I might be able to help find a cure, or better drugs to help people like him lead an easier and normal life.

I wasn’t interested in drug development until I joined a Toxicology Lab in a Pharmacology Department. I was working on a pro-drug of aspirin (that is, a form of aspirin that released the aspirin once it had passed the stomach) that was intended to be used by people with arthritis. I had to find out how effective the drug was at preventing pain, what dose would kill a cell, those sorts of things. I found it quite fascinating – and it all went on from there.

There was a big outbreak of mad cow disease when I was about 11 years old. It scared me but also got me interested in mad cow disease. When I went to university I had an opportunity to work on a science research project about mad cow disease, so I did it. The next year I knew I wanted to try to find the cure for mad cow disease 🙂
