That depends how you define zombies. If you mean cannibalistic humans then there is definitely evidence for tribes that ate the bodies or brains of their prisoners in rainforests and jungles around the world.
If you mean people that have been affected by parasites or viruses in their brain then yes this is also true. Some bacteria and viruses such as meningitis attack the blood-brain barrier and break down the protection entering the brain. Parasites can also enter the brain – people have been know to see worms swimming around in the back of their eye – GROSS!
As for the two happening together – we don’t know. But cannabalistic tribes have contracted viruses from eating the brains of dead people or animals, such as kuru and diseases similar to mad cow disease.
Oh, yes, absolutely. There is a very long history of Zombies and voo-doo in some of the South American countries. Clairvius Narcisse was a Haitain who was given a combination of drugs, so many that people called him a zombie. (Even today people who have been given lots of drugs in hospitals are sometimes called a zombie – but this is pretty cruel). With Clarvivus, they used toxins from fish and frogs on him. The same fish is a delicacy in Japan, and chefs are paid a lot of money for their ability to flick away the poison sacks during the preparation of fugu. But sometimes accidents happen!
