So I know the name of a lot of chemicals that I use in the lab everyday. These are quite easy to remember because I use them all the time – it’s like remembering the names of different foods that you like to eat or bands you like to listen to.
But the chemicals that I use for drug screening are numbered for three reasons. The first is because it would be impossible to remember them all: there are hundreds of thousands. The second is that the chemicals are all very similar with just slight variations that make their names extremely long.
The last reason is because a lot of the chemicals I work with are actually secret at the moment, and the names will only be released if they become a drug in clinical trials!
