That’s a tough question. It’s like asking ‘if you could only save your brother or your sister, which would you choose?’

      I can’t answer it.

All I can say is that when I do research into vascular disease, I’m not just looking to ‘cure’ it. I’m not entirely sure that it is possible to ‘cure’ it. What drives me as a Scientist is the search for truth. And sometimes, during my search, I’m lucky enough to be able to help somebody else along the way.

Cancer! Because it is becoming more common, and can be a devastating blow to a family. Fortunately the treatments are getting better, and more and more people are being cured of cancer. But a cure for ALL cancers would be awesome!!! It’s also a disease that has affected a dear friend of mine, so it’s also a little more personal! Cure cancer!!

Personally I would cure Crohn’s disease – I have watched the devastating effects it can have first hand as my little brother is a sufferer. Sam from TOWIE and paralympic powerlifter Ali Jawad both live with crohn’s disease, and Lewis Moody – England Rugby Union and Lions star – has the related condition Ulcerative Colitis.

Crohn’s disease causes your body to attack itself along parts or all of the digestive system. This means that you cannot absorb food properly which can have several nasty side effects. There currently is no cure, although after diagnosis you will usually be on medication for the rest of your life including steroids, anti inflammatories and drugs which suppress your immune system – meaning even the common cold can make you very ill.

I think the diseases people want to cure are always the ones that affect them most. I currently work in cancer and heart disease and these are the two biggest killers in the world. But if I could completely cure one thing I would want to make my little brother better

Although not a disease, I would cure absolute poverty.
I am a pure sciences scientist but am in the process of completing my Master’s in Public Health which looks at how do you prevent and manage diseases by addressing social needs such as shelter, food, water, access to healthcare level instead of looking at the individual alone.

Although not a disease, it is a very significant underlying cause of most diseases and illness. This includes all cancers, heart diseases, diabetes, HIV etc… The environment in which you live affects your health status to a larger extent than individual diseases. Absolute poverty means the deprivation of basic human needs such as food, shelter, water, shelter, healthcare education. Even if we had medicine to cure all diseases, the question will still remain whether the average person in the world will have access to such medications. Even if they got that medication and still went back to the same living conditions of absolute poverty they will still be coming back to the clinic the next day…So, my answer will be to eradicate absolute poverty.
