The sun has solar flares all the time, spitting out radiation into the solar system. When they flares are particularly fierce, we can get radio interference. If there was a particularly huge flare, the world wide web may ‘go down’, taking us back to the bad old days.

Yep, I agree with Anita! Solar flares happen all the time, but the big ones sometimes affect our satellites! Movies sometimes show solar flares that are so huge that they engulf the earth! This is very unlikely to happen… this will probably happen more towards the end of the earth when the sun burns out (it will sort of explode in on itself when it burns out!…that will be a HUGE solar flare!)

      Hey Swagdouglas

The others have pretty much answered this. Although dramatic in the movies, solar flares happen all the time, when they happen at the moment the worst thing that happens is facebook stops working for a while!

Like Daryl said they might get much worse when we get near to the time that the sun is dying – but hopefully we’ll be off the Earth long before that happens!
