Question: As you all work in Drug Development if you had the chance to have a £5,000 grant from the government and you had to spend this money on the Development of Drugs what would area of Drug Development would you chose? If you have chosen a drug what drug would it be and why?

  If I could spend this money on any area of drug development it would be the development of drugs which help to treat Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is a life long chronic inflammatory condition and at the moment there is no cure. There is some evidence to suggest it is the body attacking its own digestive system, and this can be triggered by stress, bacteria imbalance or an underlying illness such as a virus. Over 120 000 people are affected by Crohns in the UK, and this number is increasing.
  
  Currently steroids are often used to treat severe relapses in Crohn’s disease. But if used long term steroids can be harmful to bone, muscle and the nervous system. I would use the money to develop new steroid analogues that had specific effects on inflammation without the harmful effects on other important body functions.
  
  Why would I choose to cure Crohn’s disease? Because my little brother is a sufferer and I would like to make his life better.

  I think that nanoparticles (have you heard of them?) are a really interesting new way of making the drugs we use safer and less expensive. But we don’t really know enough about them yet. I’ve started some experiments to test how safe they really are, but I don’t have funding from the government to do this. So, this is what I would chose to do with the hypothetical £5000.

  Well, I would have to spend it on cancer drugs. I really want the field of cancer medicine to advance because it is a fairly common disease. I had a friend with cancer once so I’ve seen how bd the disease can be, and it made me really want to fight against cancer!
