At one stage all of us working in a molecular biology (gene discovery) lab were exposed to radiation. Some silly person had dripped her radioactive gel all over the benches and floor. We were not happy 🙁

Last year one of the autoclaves exploded in our lab. This is a machine used to sterilise (clean) all our lab equipment that has been exposed to bacteria. It does this by heating everything to a very high temperature and at a high pressure. Someone hadn’t loosened the lids properly before they put them in and the pressure got too high and the whole thing went BOOM! The lid hit the ceiling and a lot of bottles got smashed. Luckily no one was hurt but there was a big health and safety meeting afterwards!

Reactions exploding or catching fire. We use a lot of stuff that reacts violently with water and if people aren’t careful to keep things dry then it go off. It’s happened a couple of times but luckily the reactions weren’t big so we could put out the fire quite easily and no one got hurt.

      Hmm tough question.
I think the worst thing was when we were in the autopsy room working on an elephant, and the vet hit the alarm and we all had to run out because the elephant had TB- it’s VERY infectious!! We had to stay in quarantine and make sure we did get it!! Scary!
