Astronomers have examined lots of stars like our sun, and believe that our sun is about 1/2 way through it’s life cycle. When it nears the end of its cycle, it will expand enormously, and end up being larger that our orbit of the sun. This will mean the end of the Earth. There is a chance that the World will come to an end before then, of course – meteor impact, man-made destruction (eg atomic bomb), but end it will, eventually.
Well, as Anita and Nimesh pointed out, the sun will eventually cause the end of our world. But tha’s a LONG time away, and i think the world will end before that. Either through some natural event, like an asteroid hitting earth, or climate change, or perhaps we will destroy it- perhaps there will be a huge world war where countries use atomic bombs! I don’t think that will happen in our lifetime though!!!
I’ve just seen this, sorry it took me so long! But I think the question’s been pretty well answered – the world will end once the sun runs out of fuel and expands to a red giant – in around 7.6 billion years. And of course that’s only the case as long as humans don’t try and destroy it first.
But that’s when the earth will come to an end – our world as humans might come to an end long before or long after that. We might continue to evolve, we might colonise other planets and these new worlds might last billions of years longer than the earth. The world as we know it might be very different by the time it comes to an end!
