Favourite thing to do in my job: I like to put dry ice in a test tube and watch it explode!
I look for cures for diseases that affect your brain, like Alzheimer’s disease and Mad Cow disease!!!
I work in sunny Florida at The Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Clinic is so cool that it even appeared on The Simpsons!!!
Here we are trying to cure diseases of the brain. At the moment I am working on Parkinson’s disease, which usually affects old people. It makes them shake, and they can’t walk properly. I’m also looking for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. This affects old people too. My great grandad had Alzheimer’s disease- it made him forget things very easily.
I sometimes work on Mad Cow disease too- I used to work in a Vet’s surgery, i LOVE animals, and Mad Cow disease is a brain disease which affects cows, sheep, humans, and even cats!! It’s a really bad disease, so finding a cure is really important!!
My Typical Day
I usually look at some brains in the morning, then visit my mice in the animal room, and play with test tubes making all kinds of potions!!
Some days i will do brain surgery! I am trying to develop new ways to treat brain diseases, and brain surgery can be a really cool way to do that!
Here is a picture of me doing some brain surgery
Other days I will be looking down a microscope, trying to find out why brain diseases happen. Sometimes we will treat cells from a brain with our new treatments, and look at them under the microscope to see if it works! It’s really cool! Brain cells look like fried eggs with arms!!
Big pieces of brains look a lot different, they are sometimes quite pretty! Take a look below
Usually I will also go and play with my mice. My mice are very special- they help us to find cures to really bad diseases.
Sometimes I also get to travel to poor countries to work with people who need medical help! Here is a picture of me in Jamaica!
What I'd do with the prize money
Give it to you!
If I win the money, I want to set up a competition where YOU get to tell me how YOU want to use the money in YOUR class for YOUR very own Science Experiment!
You design your own experiment, and the winner will get the money to set up their very own test in their classroom. OR you can choose to use the money for your class to go on a daytrip, to the zoo for example!
Think about how you might want to set up a science experiment- do you want to study bugs?! Or do you want to look at cells under a microscope? Or do you want to study the snakes at the zoo? YOU DECIDE! It’s going to be FUN!
The winner will send me pictures of their experiment or fun day out, and I will put them up in Mayo Clinic, Florida! AND I will Tweet them to my Followers on Twitter so that we can help spread the cool science fun that YOU designed! You will almost be a FAMOUS SCIENTIST!
